Back in my Mid 20's, My Brother and I would Watch this Show. You just Lived in the Moment, had a few Laughs, and Mom Would Bring us Our Dinner Plates. Now In my late 60's, I watched the Whole Series and " Now Fully Realize" , how gifted Werner was, as well as other Actors on the Show. I still say Shultz, John Banner and Klink, Werner K. Stole the show from Bob Crain.
Werner, I am 63 years old and unbeknowst to you, you are one of the cherished memmories of my childhood. You and John Banner made me laugh and in doing so took my mind off of the things around me for an hour each week. I know that you are no longer with us but know that you earned your place in Heaven.
I'm surprised at the number of people who think Hogan's Heroes took place in a concentration camp. I'm guessing those people had never seen it, and if so, obviously don't know history well enough to know the difference between a concentration camp and a POW camp, which is taught as early as 8th grade in most schools. I'm glad Werner set him straight quickly. Most of the actors who played Germans were actually Jewish, including Howard Caine who played Gestapo Major Hochstetter, Leon Askin who played General Burkhalter, John Banner who played Sgt Schultz, who fought for the US in WW2 & lost family members to the Holocaust, and Werner Klemperer who played Colonel Klink was half Jewish & whose family fled the Holocaust. Even Robert Clary who played Colonel LeBeau on the Allied side was Jewish and actually spent some time in a concentration camp, and lost many members of his family at Auschwitz. If they don't have a problem with the show's subject matter, neither should anyone else.
What horrible preparation by sajak! All he had to do is watch one episode of Hogan's Heroes to know that Werner was the Commandant of a German POW camp not a concentration camp Jeez!
"My father was Jewish." And Werner's mother was Lutheran -- as were most Germans at the time. Otto Klemperer converted to Catholicism -- probably under duress in the nascent Nazi Germany -- but later went back to Judaism. Watch Klemperer as a fanatic, Jew-hating Nazi in 'Ship of Fools' -- his performance is absolutely chilling.
Sajak was not an ideal talk show host as he couldn’t avoid the temptation to talk over his guests or interrupt them with a needless question that broke the flow of their narration.
@6:08 "We're not Indian givers here." -- Notice that no one in the audience booed. -- Notice that no one called for Sajak's cancellation. -- Notice that no one protested. -- Notice that no one boycotted the show. -- Notice that no one burned down the studio. -- Notice that no one sent death threats. Notice that everyone was normal, and no one was a prisoner of the speech police. Today, if a host said "We're not Indian givers here", all hell would break loose -- because today's media is run by mentally unbalanced, radical leftists.
Sajak: “We’re not Indian givers.” I say it all the time with people old enough to know the phrase. Soon they’ll hear me say it in public and put me in jail.
Oops! Pat Sajack used the term “Indian giver” how many businesses are gonna be burned down, windows smashed and assaults take place when BLM finds out? Oh, and the democrats let’s not leave them out.
They say that Klemperer would only take acting roles which portrayed the Nazis as either utter incompetents (Colonel Klink from Hogan’s Heroes) or unabashed bigots (Judge Emil Hahn from Judgment at Nuremberg). I always respected him for this. Such a great actor. RIP Werner.
I’m 21 years old and grew up watching “Hogan’s Heroes” and the like with my Pap. In a refreshing way this interview brings out quite a strong emotion in me that I can’t describe. Hearing Werner speak of his past and speak as a man from that time period almost opens a portal to where I can still see my Pap who hasn’t been here since the day before I turned 17. I still learn more about my Pap as often as possible, he and Werner are the reasons I started speaking German so young, they’re both the reason I wanted to pursue my families history so far in depth, and are both the reasons I carry on with the same beliefs I’ve always had and will always stand up to protect those beliefs. Some day I hope to visit Germany and finally see where my Pap was stationed when he occupied Germany post-war, see and photograph the same castles he saw and photographed, stop in Cologne and see where Werner came from. It may take some time but I’ll get there, and I’ll be sure to carry on my Pap in any way possible, with the help of the humbleness and confidence I came to understand thru Mr. Klemperer. They’re both great men I look up to from roughly the same time period, men who’s lives and histories should be learned from.
Man, I miss all those actors from the 60s....actually from Errol Flynn and on. Makes me so sad to see they're gone now. God keep them all. There's gonna be a hell of a lot of great TV in the afterlife!
Not sure how well known this is but the Hogan's Heroes DVD set includes this interview as a bonus feature! It's important to remember that this man was a well known and very well accomplished actor before Hogan's Heroes came along. He had not done comedy to any great extent and I think it's pretty remarkable that a man with his background was able to adapt to the part so quickly and make turn it into an iconic character that became part of the culture! And yet somehow, after all that he was still underrated!
If I was a scriptwriter in the 1960s and someone asked me to write a comedy about a Nazi POW camp, I would have told them that they were crazy. The fact that this happened is amazing.
Never saw this interview Werner seems like he was a great guy. My dad was a WWII veteran and he loved this show I have great memories of watching it with him. He thought Hochshtetter was the funniest. "WHAT IS THIS MAN DOING HERE."
First off I never knew Pat had a show other than wheel of Fortune must have been before, and I also remember hearing that Warner only agreed to play that role because it was a comedy
Some people might not realize...or may have forgotten...that "Colonel Klink" was in a classic film from the early 1960s called Judgement at Nuremburg.
I'm still a big fan of the show. I still watch the re-runs.
Der gute Werner. A really solid Mensch.

What a wonderful man. Still watching Hogan Heroes today.

Ich liebe diesen Mann. Ein ganz großer Schauspieler. 😘

I’m confused as to how he kept a German accent growing up in L.A.
what a treat! Thank you for this clip.

such a charming man.
A class act…
Fersnickity, or just Prussian? 😂

SCHUUUUUUUUUUUUUULTZ!
This made me smile ear to ear!
Hogan's Heroes is a top 10 sitcom of all time...easily
Pat Sajak was good at this. Hogan’s Hero’s is still in reruns 2023
Sajak was not an ideal talk show host as he couldn’t avoid the temptation to talk over his guests or interrupt them with a needless question that broke the flow of their narration.
He was my favorite character on HH ! Excellent actor & humble gentleman!
Who knew there was a Pat Sajak show lol

Ha, spectacular playing of Colonel Klink. Show would never have been as good without him. Sajak has no clue about a 'concentration camp'...
Sajak: “We’re not Indian givers.” I say it all the time with people old enough to know the phrase. Soon they’ll hear me say it in public and put me in jail.
i totally hated him in judgement at nuremburg but he probably would have been flattered

How about including the date of this show in the description.

What an amazing and fascinating man.
I've been watching it for the last 25 years, over and over against, thanks to Nitro TV Channel.
I watched “Hogan’s Heroes” in reruns as a kid. I loved it then and I still love it now.
All the world war 2 vets loved that show, my dad served 41-44 in africa & france, he would always watch Combat & Hogans Heros, great actor!!
Pat Sajack was an excellent talk show host.
What is this man doing here!!!

Who ever stole Werner's monocle deserves 30 days in the cooler.
"Its just my plain insanity"

I read an article where his one demand to play a German Commandant was that he never wins.
Such a warm gentlemen....Thank-you Col Klink for the wonderful memories and the Laughs...
OCD.
Indian giver. CANCEL HIM!!!!!!!!!!
First off I never knew Pat had a show other than wheel of Fortune must have been before, and I also remember hearing that Warner only agreed to play that role because it was a comedy
All the actors that played on Hogan’s Heroes were awesome! Very funny show to watch. Much better than most of the CRAP that’s on today.
Fine actor ...fine show #Hogansheros
